Bedroom Set

For my set it needed to be quite bare, almost unfurnished, with books and clothes scattered around and it definitely helped having a SketchUp model to refer to before to have a better picture of what the space looks like in my head.

There was some discrepancy over what bed sheets to use as the production designer wanted to use lined bedding that evoked imagery of a cage, however the director wanted to stick to the blue colour palette which I agreed looked better. Other than that there didn’t seem to be any major issues, I required a few extra pair of hands to move everything as a lot of stuff was inside that I didn’t want which was really useful.

I was very happy with how it turned out and believe it looked good on camera.

Second Studio Set

This was a very quick job we were told to do that meant to look like Jo’s back up studio for different lighting. Having a laptop and notebooks being used unlike his main desk. We also had to rearrange the plants as they were too distracting on camera, think it was a rather amusing site seeing us run around with all these pots.

Living Room Set

I enjoyed helping out on the living room as I really liked it as a space. It required moving quite a bit around to get the correct layout, and the crew wouldn’t stop sitting in it or leaving mugs around that was rather frustrating at times. But I think it turned out to be a nice space, one I want in my own home!

Dining Room

This set was to be very simplistic with not a lot around other than some nice crockery and candles as to not distract from the actors. The director also expressed her want to have photographs of people in uncomfortable positions behind them on the wall(presumably taken by Jo), this would be a representation of how they felt in the moment.

First Day: The Medical Studio Set

First day on set and the nerves were high, luckily we had acquired a room in the University College of Osteopathy, which meant we were using a genuine Medical studio. However the room was rather barren and required a very quick turn around for the art department as time was limited. Furthermore due to the last minute acquiring of the room, we weren’t able to see the location before hand, this meant we had quite a different take on what the space looked like and I think the desk especially hindered from that. But all in all I think it works well as a Doctors studio.

Making a Budget

Screenshot 2019-02-07 at 02.25.50Screenshot 2019-02-07 at 02.26.17I found a dressing budget to be quite tedious, but I understood just how incredibly important it was as a lot of the props were either my own or from friends, so using it as a checklist became really useful, although I think everyone found it tricky to not spend over the budget, sourcing from the cheapest places possible.

The Invitation

I was asked to create an invitation for the ballet, this would serve as a way for Jo to realise that Lea was no longer the lead of the show.

I wanted to try my hand at graphic design as I had never really delved into it before, I am pleased at how it turned out. However, it unfortunately wasn’t used in the film as the director went with a different approach using a poster of Coral’s face, this is because its a more obvious, visual statement for the audience and made a lot of sense to go with that route.
